The Dead Marshes

The Dead Marshes were part of the ancient battlefield of the Battle of Dagorlad between the Last Alliance of Elves and Men and the forces of Mordor, where many of the fallen were laid to rest. Over time, the battlefield became marshes, which swallowed up the dead, though their bodies could still be seen floating in the water. Dreary and wearisome. Cold, clammy winter still held sway in this forsaken country. The only green was the scum of livid weed on the dark greasy surfaces of the sullen waters. Dead grasses and rotting reeds loomed up in the mists like ragged shadows of long forgotten summers. There floating restlessly in his watery grave, eyes hollow agape, lay Oropher - the Elvenking of Greenwood the Great and father to Thranduil Oropherion. His drowned soul, brightest of all candles of corpses, glimmering lividly beaneath the mouldering surface - lachrymose and waiting - for his son to Return.

The Lair of Ungoliant Wirilomë

Ungoliant Wirilomë's Lair was the home of the great spider Ungoliant in Aman. Ungoliant's Lair was a ravine located in the southern part of Aman in the clefts of the Pelóri south of the mountain Hyamentir, and west of Avathar. Ungoliant came here shortly after her former master was defeated and imprisoned by the Valar. Here, she lived as a monstrous spider sucking up all light and spinning it into dark nets and webs that strangled all light from entering it, making it one of the most horrifically dark and evil places ever to exist. For thousands of years, she lived, fed, and hid from the Valar whose watchful eyes did not extend into the far south until Melkor came with his offerings. As Ungoliant went to Middle-earth to live, the lair was presumably abandoned and it is not known what became of it or whether the Valar ever found it and cleansed it of darkness. But just presumably...

Utumno

Utumno was delved very deep into the flesh of the Earth. Here Melkor built his first of many dungeons and deep halls of obsidian, fire, and ice. Utumno had many hundreds of caves, tunnels, corners, and rooms, which allowed many things to remain hidden and secret for a very long time. When the world was young and Arda was bathed in the light of the two lamps Illuin and Ormal, it was then Melkor first dug the great Pits of Utumno deep beneath the mountains of the North. The fortress was constructed in the North in the Iron Mountains over one-thousand miles from Angband, where the light of the lamps was almost nonexistent. Here were gathered all the evil powers of the World under the Lord of Darkness. Their numbers were vast, and Melkor twisted many beautiful things into horrifying and dreadful forms. All the great evils of the world were bred in this place, as were the first of the Werewolves, Vampires, Spiders, Fell beasts, and bloodsucking insects. He also bred Trolls, "made in mockery" of the Ents as stated by Treebeard. It is likely that Orcs were first bred here by torturing, mutilating and corrupting lost Elves. Cruel spirits, phantoms, wraiths and evil demons stalked the halls of Utumno and haunted the surrounding forests; all were under the command of Melkor and his fallen Maiar servants: Gothmog the Balrog and Sauron the Sorcerer.

Erebor

Lonely Mountain (Sindarin Erebor) is a mountain in the north of Rhovanion. It is the source of the Celduin River, and the location of the Kingdom Under the Mountain. The town of Dale lies in a vale on its southern slopes. One of the last great Fire-drakes of Middle-earth, Smaug rose to prominence by laying waste to the town of Dale and capturing the Dwarf-kingdom of the Lonely Mountain (Erebor) with all of its treasure.
