 | Yggdrasill is an immense mythical tree that connects the Nine Worlds. Yggdrasill is an immense ash tree that is central and considered very holy. The gods go to Yggdrasil daily to assemble at their things. The branches of Yggdrasil extend far into the heavens, and the tree is supported by three roots that extend far away into other locations; one to the well Urðarbrunnr in the heavens, one to the spring Hvergelmir, and another to the well Mímisbrunnr. Creatures live within Yggdrasil, including the wyrm (flesh-eating dragon that gnaws at her roots) Níðhöggr, an unnamed eagle, and the stags Dáinn, Dvalinn, Duneyrr and Duraþrór.

| Niflheim (or Niflheimr) ("Mist Home", the "Abode of Mist" or "Mist World") is one of the Nine Worlds and is a location which overlaps with the notions of Niflhel and Hel.
Niflheim was primarily a realm of primordial ice and cold, with nine frozen rivers. Two classes of legendary beings were often labeled by scholars as the inhabitants of Niflheim — the Hrímthursar, widely known as the Frost Giants (or Rime-Giants) and the Niflungar ("children of the mist"), a race of treasure-hoarding spirits better remembered as the Nibelungs. Niflheim was one of the two primordial realms, the other one being Muspelheim, the realm of fire. Between these two realms of cold and heat, creation began when its waters mixed with the heat of Muspelheim to form a "creating steam". Later, it became the abode of Hel, a goddess daughter of Loki, and the afterlife for her subjects, those who did not die a heroic or notable death.

| Jötunheimr (World of the Giants) is one of the Nine Worlds and the homeland of the giants (Jötnar). Jotunheim is also known as Utgard (Útgarðr - Beyond the Fence), a name which establishes the realm as occupying one extreme end of the spectrum between the innangard and the utangard. That which is innangard (“inside the fence”) is orderly, law-abiding, and civilized, while that which is utangard (“beyond the fence”) is chaotic, anarchic, and wild.

| Múspellsheimr (Zmeivanheimr), also called Múspell, is a realm of fire. This realm is one of the Nine Worlds, ruled by Surtr with his consort Sinmara. The denizens of Muspelheim are usually referred to as the eldjötnar (fire giants), though they are also identified as the Múspellssynir (or Múspellsmegir — sons of Muspell) and the Rjúfendr (from rjúfa — to break, tear asunder, Destroyers of Doomsday). Muspelheim is fire; and the land to the North, Niflheim, is ice. The two mixed and created water from the melting ice in Ginnungagap. The sun and the stars originate from Muspelheim.
According to the Ragnarök prophecies, the sons of Muspell will break the Bifröst bridge, signaling the end of times.

| Miðgarðr, old Manaheimr (literally "middle enclosure") is the name for the world (in the sense of oikoumene) inhabited by and known to humans and specifically one of the Nine Worlds. It is the Nordic twin of Middle Earth.

| Ásgarðr (Enclosure of the Æsir) is one of the Nine Worlds and home to the Æsir tribe of gods. It is surrounded by an incomplete wall attributed to a Hrimthurs riding the stallion Svaðilfari. Odin and his wife, Frigg, are the rulers of Asgard. One of Asgard's well known locations is Valhöll (Valhalla), in which Odin rules.

| Ginnungagap ("gaping abyss", "yawning void") is the primordial void.
Ginnungagap, the Yawning Void ... which faced toward the northern quarter, became filled with heaviness, and masses of ice and rime, and from within, drizzling rain and gusts; but the southern part of the Yawning Void was lighted by those sparks and glowing masses which flew out of Múspellheim. In the northern part of Ginnungagap lay the intense cold of Niflheim, and to the southern part lay the equally intense heat of Muspelheim. The cosmogonic process began when the effulgence of the two met in the middle of Ginnungagap.
